Artistic Vs. Academic

It is really upsetting to hear that vexatious people think that an artistic person is not as clever as an academic person. I just can't understand why academic students and professionals think that they are more superior to the creative side of the race? This makes creative students feel very shit about themselves when a lot of artistic subjects are about self expression and by you saying that, it stops students from excelling in what they do best.

So, please just take the time to read this blog post as it's something that pisses me off most of the time.

Firstly, I would just like to say that I am not going to try and make one person feel better than the other. I am just trying to explain to academic students that you aren't the only ones who have gained success and wealth through your preferred subject/career choice.

Art makes up your lives no matter what. What you are wearing, what pen you're holding was designed and made by someone, and what desk you sit at was designed by someone. All the objects you use and touch in your life were designed in one way or another and people don't recognise this enough.

I really enjoy the subjects I do (Art, Photography and Media) and they all help me express myself. I am constantly looking around, trying to find inspiration that could potentially benefit YOU later on in life before it benefits myself. Just because I'm not learning about Pythagorus' theorem, or how to form a chemical reaction does not mean I'm any less important/ less deserving than you.

Art is one of the subjects I enjoy the most and I am wanting to pursue it as a career. So, by you saying to me that it's less important, and that I don't work as hard compared to an academic student is bullshit. I work so hard to achieve what I have in my subjects today. Starting college at 9 and finishing at 6 is not easy. Yes, a lot of people in the 'real world' work longer hours than I do and well done to them! I look up to those people. But for me, nine hours of work most days of the week is very tiring. I have to constantly develop my old ideas and make them even better. There is also written work as well as physical, which needs to be so detailed, and sometimes it can be hard to think of something to write about if you don't like the artists work.

In order for me to get an A in photography this year, I have to get 98%. The grade boundaries are very very high and you may think that that grade is easy to get because it's 'just' photography. However, I would like to see you come up with intuitive, original and self expressive ideas that have included a lot of thought. Not just a few sentences on paper that you read from a book.

My lessons are all self taught as well. I have guidance from a teacher to help me develop my scheme of work, but I have to initially plan my own lessons and work things out for myself. I'm pretty sure that academic students have a teacher standing in front of a class telling you what notes to take down as your own... just keeping it real.

Not only do I have to be critical of my own work, but my teachers, friends and industry artists do too. It can be so hard knowing that you have worked for a whole month on a final piece and then your peers tell you that it's not good enough. This results in an art student stressing out and having to develop it even further, if not completely start it again. This gives that person double the amount of work to everyone else as they have to document the development and trial different techniques; not to mention that they have to find new artists to research, respond to and then finally complete an evaluation.

All I am asking is if people could be more respectful of other peoples decisions because it gets very tiring hearing the same old shit like "Oh, but you're just an art student." or "You don't do as much work because you're an art student."

All these pathetic assumptions need to stop.

I love diversity and we need artistic students and academic students in this world for different reasons. So please don't drag down art students for the one thing that they love. We wouldn't drag you down for liking a subject that is academic (I hope). If you thought that this blog post was dragging academic students down then I'm not sorry for your sensitivity.
